Florida Keys
The Florida Keys is a chain of islands at the bottom of Florida. They stretch about 120 miles and are known for their clear waters and relaxed vibe. These islands are connected by the Overseas Highway, which has views of the Atlantic Ocean and Gulf of Mexico. There are five main areas: Key Largo, Islamorada, Marathon, Big Pine Key and the Lower Keys, and Key West. Each place offers something different, like diving in Key Largo or the nightlife in Key West. Activities like snorkeling, diving, fishing, and boating are popular here.
The Keys have a rich history, from Native American tribes to pirates and shipwrecks. Key West was very wealthy in the 19th century because of salvaging shipwrecks. The Overseas Railroad once connected the Keys but was destroyed by a hurricane in 1935, leading to the creation of the Overseas Highway. The culture here is a mix of American, Bahamian, and Cuban influences, seen in the architecture, food, and festivals. Seafood, especially spiny lobster and Key lime pie, is a big part of the food scene. Music varies from beach tunes to live bands in Key West, often with Caribbean and Latin influences.
